Brake failure causes bus to ram into trailer, knocks down cops

The two officers were manning a roadblock when the accident occurred/FILE

KERICHO, Kenya, Dec 26 – Three people, including a police officer, died on Christmas Day in a road accident at the Kericho — Kisumu junction.

The accident occurred at around 7pm when a 52-seater bus – which is registered to a Sacco that plies the Thika Road route – was ferrying passengers to Kisumu when it reportedly developed a serious mechanical problem and collided head on with a trailer which was heading to the opposite direction.

Kericho police say the out-of-control bus then hit and killed a Traffic Police Officer at a roadblock he was manning.

The driver of the bus sustained serious injuries on the head.

Another Police Officer also manning the roadblock sustained slight injuries on the right lower leg.

Police confirmed that they have so far accounted for 31 passengers who were receiving treatment at the Kericho County Hospital.

The others are still unaccounted for as witnesses report some passengers jumped out of the moving bus on realising that it had developed mechanical problems.

The Traffic Police Department and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) have been conducting impromptu spot-checks along the country’s major transport corridors in a bid to enforce vehicle roadworthiness which have been blamed for the recent spate of fatal accidents which claimed over 170 people this month alone, according to official statistics.
