NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 27 – Kenya Railways plans to enter the parcel delivery business as it seeks to diversify revenue and tap into growing demand for logistics services.
The state corporation said it will introduce a same-day parcel service between Nairobi and Mombasa using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The move will see Kenya Railways compete with established courier firms, driven by rising e-commerce activity and demand for faster delivery of small consignments.
The Nairobi–Mombasa corridor remains a key trade route, handling a large share of cargo from the Port of Mombasa to inland markets.
The planned service is also part of efforts by public transport operators to maximise use of existing infrastructure amid fluctuating passenger numbers and rising operational costs.
Rail-based parcel delivery could offer a faster and more predictable alternative to road transport, while easing pressure on major highways.
Kenya Railways has yet to disclose pricing and timelines for the rollout.
