NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 –   Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Freight Services has so far moved over 1600 containers in January after it was officially launched January 2, 2018.

“Monday’s train which left Mombasa at 6:40 hrs hauling 38 wagons (76 TEUs) arrived at the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi at 16:40 hrs,” Management said.

The move comes as the railways offered shippers a three-month promotion by halving its freight charges.

KR is charging a subsidized rate of Sh35,000 to transport a 20-foot container and Sh40,000 for a 40-foot container from Mombasa to Embakasi Inland Container Depot (ICD).

Normal rates of Sh64, 500 for a 20-foot container and Sh84, 300 for the 40-foot container will come into effect in April.
