NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 26 – Governor Cornel Rasanga is the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate in Siaya County.

Rasanga won with 143,446 votes defeating his closest rival Nicholas Gumbo who got 87,467 votes.

The results have now ensured that Rasanga will defend his seat in the August polls.

“Cornel Rasanga managed to get 143,446. Rasanga is the winner of the ODM ticket for the Governor of Siaya,” the Returning Officer declared.

Rasanga’s supporters welcomed the announcement with jubilation and described the process as free and fair.

“We are very happy as the supporters of the incumbent. What we can say is that we are grateful that our governor has won,” one of them said.

“The message I have is for all the aspirants is that if you have lost, it is good sportsmanship to just concede defeat and move on,” another stated.

Rarieda MP Gumbo however contested the results.

“The Returning Officer can announce me as the last person for all I care. I do not know where he is getting the figures because from the statistics I have, I am leading,” he stated.

Last year, Gumbo, William Oduol and Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo had entered into an unwritten pact to support one another to unseat Rasanga.

Midiwo and Gumbo were among the ODM leaders who had earlier campaigned for Rasanga, but later turned to be his fiercest critics after a serious fallout.

Midiwo was also defeated in Gem by Elisha Odhiambo after he garnered 8,950 votes against the victor’s 13,400 votes.
