Kenya-China Chamber supports climate learning at Kibera Primary School

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 23 – The Kenya China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCCI) has donated lunch boxes and pencil pouches to pupils at Kibera Primary School, reinforcing its commitment to education, climate awareness and community empowerment.

The initiative, led by KCCCI Chairman Tim Chen, also featured the screening of an educational film on climate change, aimed at helping learners understand the impact of environmental changes on communities in Kenya and globally, and the role young people can play in addressing them.

“Every one of us can protect our country. We will become the guardians and protectors of our home and our nation. We want this to be a regular engagement—a time to learn, love and build friendships between the Chinese community in Nairobi and our Kenyan friends,” Chen said.

The activity forms part of Phase II of the School Science Popularization Project, a flagship education and mentorship programme spearheaded by KCCCI to promote science learning and expose pupils to global challenges such as climate change through age-appropriate content.

KCCCI Chief Executive Officer Blak Aende praised teachers for their role in shaping society despite limited resources.

“When you lift a child, you lift a family. When you lift a family, you lift a community. And when you lift a community, we build a nation,” Aende said, thanking Kibera Primary School for hosting the initiative.

Founded in 1953 by Queen Elizabeth, Kibera Primary School is one of Nairobi’s oldest public institutions and currently serves 1,864 pupils, many from underserved communities. The donated learning items are intended to support daily schooling while promoting dignity, care and equal opportunity in education.

Teachers and school administrators welcomed the programme, noting that mentorship and exposure to global issues help broaden pupils’ perspectives and build confidence.

KCCCI said Phase II of the School Science Popularization Project will be rolled out to more schools as the Chamber expands its social responsibility initiatives, with education, youth empowerment, science learning and sustainability at the core.
