NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 11 – The government has approved the dualing of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road in a bid to ease persistent traffic jams along the busy Kiambu Road corridor.
According to State House, the project will expand the current two-lane highway into a dual carriageway with bypasses, loops, and access roads to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times.
“The project will also incorporate non-motorised transport lanes and commuter facilities to enhance road safety and accessibility,” the statement said, noting that the corridor serves Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town, areas that experience chronic congestion, especially during rush hours.
The project comes months after the Environment and Land Court ruled that only 0.1233 hectares of Karura Forest could be used for the expansion, overturning earlier approval for 51.64 acres granted to the Kenya National Highways Authority by the Kenya Forest Service.
The ruling followed a petition by the Green Belt Movement, which challenged the annexation of forest land without adequate environmental and public consultation.
