NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 23 – The International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-Track) has appointed the Energy and Petroleum Authority (EPRA) as the local issuer of the I-REC(E) to Kenyan renewable energy companies.
EPRA has been tasked with conducting inspections of energy-generating facilities in the country to authenticate that the generation of electricity is from renewable sources.
According to the I-Track Foundation, an I-REC for electricity is referred to as an I-REC(E) and is an exchangeable Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC) that conveys information about the production of a unit of electricity, such as where the electricity was produced, the capacity of the production facility, and the energy source.
“Kenya is on the cusp of achieving 100% renewable energy electricity generation which currently stands at 84.65 percent contribution to the energy mix,” EPRA Director General (DG) Daniel Kiptoo said.
“We have remained steadfast in harnessing energy from renewable energy sources. Say, geothermal energy production surged by 21.84 percent, and interconnected solar PV systems saw a substantial 41.84 percent increase while wind energy contributed 7.28 percent,” he added.
