Constitutional changes are necessary, says Karua

NYERI, Kenya Oct 12-NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua has supported the proposed changes to the Constitution saying that they are necessary, and they should highlight the issue of gender equality.

She supported the proposal of making counties constituencies saying that representation in the both houses should be both a man and a woman.

To attain gender equality, Karua proposed changes in the Constitution that will see women are included in the ballot where if the presidential candidate is a man the running mate should be a woman.

“As women we should take advantage of push for law review and we should also demand for the constitution to be amended to include, if a presidential candidate is a man the running mate should be a woman and vice versa,” she said.

She said the supposed proposals should be advantageous to women in all levels of the government.

She said the same system should be applied in all levels of elective posts to ensure all genders are included in the top seats in the country.

At the same time, Karua said that the public should be engaged on debate on law review to ensure they raise the issues they want addressed before a referendum.

“The Constitution was made for Kenyans not Kenyans for the Constitution, we can sit down negotiate as Kenyans and check the areas we must change,” she noted

Speaking during the launch of Nyeri County Assembly Women Association at a hotel in Nyeri, Karua said the electoral body in the country IEBC should be reconfigured before the country goes for a referendum.

“This is an opportunity to put things right by cutting the budget allocated to IEBC. Elections in Kenya are expensive than developing countries in the world,” she said.
