Govt to issue report on gaming machines on Monday

They want the High Court to order the release of the gaming machines before they are illegally destroyed/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 23 – The government is Monday morning expected to make its formal response to a petition filed by the Embakasi West MP George Theuri over harassment and confiscation of slot and gaming machines belonging to the members of the Counties Amusement and Gaming Society.

The National Assembly Sports, Culture and Tourism Commitee which is handling the petition is scheduled to hear from Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi who has maintained that the government will not relent in the crackdown on gambling machines in the country because the machines have destroyed the lives of children and families.

This comes after some 22 operators of betting machines this month sued Matiang’i and Attorney-General Kihara Kariuki claiming the actions of the security officers are illegal, unconstitutional and amount to infringement of economic rights.

The operators claim the Attorney-General is yet to come up with a legal framework for regulation of slot machines.
