Kenya happy with UN office upgrade

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 29 – President Mwai Kibaki has commended the United Nations for elevating its Nairobi offices from category C to category B station terming the decision a vote of confidence in the Government’s commitment to improve facilities and security.

The President assured of the country’s determination to ensure that the UN fraternity in the country works in a safe and secure environment.

The Head of State, also, reassured Kenyans and UN agencies resident of the government’s total commitment to further improve infrastructural facilities and security around the country.

President Kibaki hailed the decision of the UN to hold its Chief Executives Board meeting in Nairobi, that will be attended by the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon this week.

The Head of State said Kenya welcomed the UN delegates and the government would extend its full support to the meeting.

President Kibaki expressed appreciation to the United Nations agencies for supporting Government’s efforts in the promotion of the country’s social, economic and political development.

The President, particularly, thanked the UN Development Programme for the support extended to the Government last year in the country’s pursuit for a new Constitutional dispensation.

President Kibaki made the remarks today at his Harambee House office during a meeting with the resident representatives of United Nations (UN) agencies based in Nairobi who paid him a courtesy call.

The Head of State urged the UN agencies to also consider extending moral and technical support to the process of implementing the new Constitution.

Saying the Constitution overwhelmingly passed in last year’s referendum would entrench democracy and boost the economy, President Kibaki reassured that Kenyans were focused on fast-tracking the implementation phase.

The President told the UN representatives that Kenya greatly appreciated the continued support to the country’s realization of national priorities, achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the development blueprint Vision 2030.

The assistance channeled through the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) during the 2009-2013 period, President Kibaki observed, would in the long term improve governance, reduce disparities and vulnerabilities, promote equitable economic growth, reduce poverty and hunger reduction in the country.

Saying that the UN remained a valued partner in the country’s endeavour to achieve MDGs and Vision 2030, President Kibaki appreciated the coordinated approach to development assistance to the country and looked forward to enhanced cooperation.   

On their part, the UN resident representatives led by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Aenaeas Chuma assured the President of their commitment to enhance the existing development partnership between their agencies and the Kenya Government.

The UN Representatives included UNICEF Kenya Country Director Dr. Olivia Yambi, FAO’s Luca Alinovi and Prof. Joseph Massaquoi of UNESCO.

The Talks were attended by Internal Security and acting Foreign Affairs Minister Prof. George Saitoti and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Francis Kimemia among other senior Government officials.
