Nameless in MAMA finals

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 27 – Kenya got six nominations for the MTV Africa Music Awards this time round and now the husband of last year’s winner Wahu, has bagged three selections; Best Male, Best Performer, and Artist of The Year.

The nominations were announced at a packed event at The Loft on Wednesday evening.

Wahu was also nominated in the Best Video category, for the song ‘Little Things You Do’ featuring Bobbi Wine. Amani, who recently ventured into film-making is the new entrant alongside STL picking up nominations for Best Female; while STL was slotted under Best New Act.

Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa said the increased number of nominations – up from two last year, were a reflection of improved quality.

“Not only in video quality. There is improved performances and quality of the artists. The competition on the competition is getting stiffer, and we’re proud as MTV to be able to help open up such a platform,” he said.

Artists who came to find out if their videos were chosen complained that it was the same names that were circulating and questioned whether the process was fair.

But Okosi said it was a panel of experts from the countries involved that picked the nominees and challenged artists to up their game. More than 1 billion people are expected to watch the event, which will be hosted by the most popular refugee, Wyclef Jean!
