NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 20 – Safaricom has completed the largest upgrade of its M-Pesa platform since 2015, boosting processing capacity from 4,500 to 6,000 transactions per second, with scalability of up to 12,000.
The upgrade, dubbed Fintech 2.0, introduces a new core system built on cloud-native architecture, enabling faster deployment of products, enhanced fraud detection, and higher resilience through multiple hosting sites.
The platform also integrates artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring and system self-healing, reducing the risk of outages and fraud.
M-Pesa, launched in 2007, has evolved from a mobile money transfer service into a digital financial ecosystem offering payments, credit, savings, insurance, and remittances.
Safaricom says the upgrade is designed to position the service to meet rising demand across Africa’s digital economy.
