NCA suspends works after structural failure in Westlands

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 18 – The National Construction Authority (NCA) has suspended construction works at a proposed residential development along Peponi Road in Westlands, Nairobi, following a reported structural failure at the site.

The incident occurred at a project located on L.R. No. Nairobi Block/179 on Monday, December 15, prompting the authority to dispatch a quality assurance team for an immediate compliance inspection.

According to the NCA, the development—designed to include three basement levels and 13 suspended floors—exhibited signs of structural failure, leading to an immediate halt of all construction activities and the cordoning off of the site to protect the public.

The project was registered with the authority on September 27, 2024. The contractor is Meraki Universal Building Limited, while the project team includes architect Peter Kamau Mwangi and structural engineer Samuel Maina Wairimu.

The area surrounding the site has been secured by the National Disaster Management Unit and the National Police Service. As a precaution, neighbouring occupants have been advised to temporarily vacate pending further technical assessments.

The NCA said a multi-agency committee has been formed to conduct a detailed structural evaluation to determine whether the building can be safely salvaged or will require controlled demolition. The committee includes representatives from the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors, NEMA, Nairobi City County, the National Buildings Inspectorate, and other government agencies.

The authority said no construction will be allowed to resume until investigations are concluded and safety recommendations implemented, urging members of the public to stay away from the affected area and rely on official updates.
