KITUI, Kenya, Nov 13 – President William Ruto on Thursday launched and inspected ongoing development projects valued at more than Sh20 billion during his tour of Kitui County.
He began the second day of his Lower Eastern tour by handing over the Kamuwongo fresh produce market in Mwingi North, a Sh59 million facility that began construction in May 2024.
The market can host 200 traders and includes an ICT hub, cafeteria, cold rooms, shower rooms and baby nursing rooms. It will be managed jointly by the County Government of Kitui and traders.
The President said Kamuwongo Market is among 11 similar facilities under construction in the county under the first phase of a nationwide market improvement programme.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Kitui Governor Julius Malombe, several Cabinet Secretaries, MPs and MCAs attended the function.
Ruto announced a Sh15 billion allocation for 6,000 affordable housing units in Kitui, including Sh1.6 billion for new student hostels for universities, technical colleges and KMTC campuses.
He added that Sh2.3 billion has been earmarked to connect 20,000 homes to electricity in the 2026/27 financial year.
On infrastructure, the government is upgrading 160km of roads across the county. Ruto launched the construction of the 13km Kamuwongo–Kandwia road at a cost of Sh1 billion, a project that had stalled for eight years. He also said works on the 30km Kyuso–Tseikuru road will begin soon, terming the link vital for residents who have endured poor road conditions for years.
In Migwani, Mwingi West, he inspected the 33km Tulia–Migwani–Mbondoni road, while in Ikutha, Kitui South, he launched the construction of the Ikutha–Kanziku–Mutha–Motomo road. The President also flagged off the county’s Last Mile electricity rollout, set to light up 20,000 households.
At Nzombe in Kitui East, Ruto launched the 25km Chuluni–Zombe road, costing Sh1.4 billion. He also opened the Kitui East Huduma Centre, funded through NG-CDF, and directed the Interior Ministry to ensure it is fully operational by early 2025.
He further commissioned the Kitui East Technical and Vocational College and announced Sh70 million for equipment and Sh150 million for student hostels. The Ministry of Lands and Housing was instructed to construct a new modern market in Zombe.
During the tour, Ruto issued 30,000 title deeds to residents of Mwingi West and Kitui South. He said the government has prepared more than 42,000 title deeds to be issued across the county in the coming months.
The President maintained that national development projects will continue to be implemented across all regions regardless of political affiliation.
