Businessman killed in Sri Lanka’s shooting linked to underworld rivalries

A police spokesperson told reporters that the shooting took place near the Urban Council premises of Ambalangoda, a coastal town in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, at around 10:30 a.m. local time. The victim was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but succumbed soon after admission.

According to initial investigations, the assailants arrived in a white car, opened fire, and fled the scene. Police said four special teams have been deployed to track down the suspects.

The victim, identified as Warushavithana Mirantha, was reportedly a relative of a well-known underworld figure known as “Karandeniya Sudda.” Authorities believed the killing may be connected to an ongoing feud between rival criminal groups.

In recent weeks, several underworld associates have been shot dead in separate incidents across Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has intensified crackdowns by law enforcement.
