NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16 – The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE) has launched the Kenya AI & Cloud Pioneer Initiative during the Huawei Cloud Kenya Summit 2025, signaling a major push to position the country as a regional leader in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The summit, themed “Accelerate Intelligence, Ignite Smart Kenya,” brought together over 500 government, industry, and academic leaders. It showcased new Huawei innovations, including Cloud Stack 8.5 and upgraded DataArts, and introduced five industry-specific cloud solutions.
ICT Secretary Washington Okoth said Kenya is shifting from traditional data centers to scalable cloud platforms under a new national cloud policy. Huawei Kenya CEO Gao Fei reiterated the firm’s 27-year commitment to Kenya’s digital development.
Notable success stories included M-PESA’s Africa-wide operations on Huawei Cloud and Konza Technopolis’ Tier 3 data center powering over 70 government services. Huawei also signed an MoU with MICDE to train 6,000 students annually in digital skills.
The initiative, backed by policy, technology, and talent development, marks a bold step toward a smarter, AI-powered Kenyan economy.
“Through our strategic partnership with Huawei, Konza Technopolis is powering Kenya’s digital transformation by enabling secure, scalable government cloud services and supporting AI development through our future-ready national data center,” Konza CEO John Okwiri said.
“We’re equipping young people with the skills they need for the digital economy, connecting them to jobs, and working closely with innovators and partners to build a thriving ecosystem that positions Kenya for long-term success in the digital age.”
