Mexico to ship water to Texas following U.S. complaint

MEXICO CITY, April 12 (Xinhua) — Mexico will “immediately deliver” millions of cubic meters of water to the U.S. state of Texas, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s complaint a day earlier.

“A significant amount of water will be delivered, based on the available supply, and we hope that the upcoming rainy season will provide more water, allowing us to send additional supplies to the United States,” the president said at her regular morning press conference.

Sheinbaum also explained that an agreement is in place to divide the water treatment, part of which is carried out in Mexico and the rest in the U.S. state of California. However, she noted that the United States has not fulfilled its part of the agreement, as it has not expanded the treatment plant as required.

The announcement comes after Trump criticized Mexico on Thursday, accusing the country of owing millions of liters of water to Texas.

Trump also threatened to impose new tariffs and sanctions unless Mexico honors the 1944 bilateral water treaty, which obligates both countries to share the waters of the Colorado and Rio Grande (Bravo) rivers that form their border.
