Uganda’s national carrier secures direct route to London in expansion move

KAMPALA, March 20 (Xinhua) — Uganda Airlines, the national carrier of Uganda, has secured a direct route to London, Britain, in an expansion move to boost the East African country’s trade and tourism opportunities.

Uganda Airlines said in a statement issued here Thursday that starting May 18, it will operate four weekly direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick Airport.

“This new route represents Uganda Airlines’ first foray into Europe and re-establishes a direct air link between Entebbe and the United Kingdom after nearly a decade,” the airline said.

Jenifer Bamuturaki, chief executive officer of the airline, was quoted as saying that the route would cater to the growing travel demand between the two countries.

As Uganda and Britain share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, this new route is expected to bolster trade, tourism, and investment opportunities, she added.

The airline currently operates routes in Africa, India, and the United Arab Emirates, with plans to expand its network to China.
