NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 5 – Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) CEO Peter Njenga has been appointed Co-Chair of the B20 Task Force on Energy Mix and Just Transition under South Africa’s G20 presidency.
“This appointment underscores Kenya’s growing influence in the global green energy transition,” Njenga said.
“I am truly humbled to be the first Kenyan to hold this prestigious role, which gives us an opportunity to shape energy policies on a global scale.”
The B20, the official business engagement group of the G20, serves as the private sector’s voice in international economic and policy decisions.
Njenga’s role signals Africa’s increasing influence in climate action and energy security, reinforcing Kenya’s leadership in renewable energy innovation and policy advocacy.
Kenya derives over 90 percent of its electricity from clean energy sources, making it one of the most sustainable energy economies globally.
KenGen, with an installed capacity of 1,786MW, leads Africa in geothermal energy production, generating 754MW from geothermal sources.
Under Njenga’s leadership, KenGen has expanded its renewable energy portfolio, strengthened regional partnerships, and influenced global discussions on energy security, climate resilience, and sustainable economic growth.
“This is a defining moment, not just for KenGen and Kenya, but for Africa,” Njenga said. “As we engage with global stakeholders, my priority will be to ensure that Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities are central to global energy policy discussions.”
His appointment is expected to amplify Africa’s voice in global climate and energy conversations, advocating for green technology investments, equitable financing mechanisms, and sustainable economic models.
At a time when the world is balancing the shift to renewable energy with economic development and energy access, Njenga’s experience in scaling up clean energy solutions in a developing economy will offer valuable insights.
