Nairobi County, Kenya Power resolve Sh4.8bn wayleave dispute

Nairobi, February 26 – The standoff between Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) and Kenya Power (KPLC) has been resolved following a high-level meeting convened by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.

The meeting, attended by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, aimed to settle long-standing commercial disputes between the two entities.

Speaking at City Hall, Governor Sakaja confirmed that both sides had agreed to verify outstanding claims and address them amicably.

“There is a wayleave stalemate amounting to Sh4.8 billion that City Hall wants addressed. We have agreed to take it up with Waziri CS Wandayi and find an amicable solution,” Sakaja stated.

The dispute had escalated recently, with NCCG blocking access to Kenya Power premises and cutting water supply. The situation worsened when a garbage truck dumped waste near KPLC offices, an incident Sakaja termed “unfortunate.”

Following the meeting, both parties agreed to restore normalcy immediately, including reinstating water supply and removing blockades at KPLC premises.

To prevent future conflicts, the Governor and Energy CS will handle commercial disputes directly.

Both sides also committed to adhering to development control regulations under the Physical and Land Use Planning Act (PLUPA) 2019 to ensure compliance with county approvals.
