NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 4 – Uber has partnered with Safaricom to provide free data bundles to drivers, delivery partners, and riders using the Uber and Uber Eats apps.
In this arrangement, Safaricom has zero-rated the Uber apps, allowing free access with Uber covering the costs.
This collaboration also benefits Uber Eats customers and merchants across Kenya, enabling them to use the app data-free.
According to Uber, limited mobile data is a barrier for many Kenyans, particularly in rural areas, to access mobility options such as Uber Boda.
“Through this partnership with Safaricom, we can help bridge the gap in accessing data for many Kenyans, enabling them to access reliable and safe mobility,” said Imran Manji, Uber’s Head of East Africa.
“For drivers, this also represents savings on mobile data.”
Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, highlighted the initiative as part of Safaricom’s commitment to providing customers with affordable access to essential services.
The free data can be accessed by ensuring that VPN blockers are off and toggling Airplane Mode on and off on smartphones.
Uber has launched over nine products in Kenya since its debut nearly a decade ago, including Uber Electric Boda and Uber Comfort, designed to integrate with Kenyans’ everyday mobility needs.
