NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 6 – Tanzanian lawmakers have lauded the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for expanding the country’s tax base through the implementation of several policies that have boosted collection.
They gave an example of the financial year (FY) 2022–23, where KRA raised Sh2.66 trillion, an increase from Sh964 billion during a similar period in 2013–14 FY.
According to KRA, it more than doubled collection by expanding the tax base from 6.1 million active taxpayers to 8.2 million.
“We are committed to further automating our services to simplify the tax process and enhance revenue collection,” stated the KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga said after hosting a delegation of Tanzanian MPs at his office in Nairobi yesterday.
“Additionally, KRA will continue to integrate its systems at an organizational standpoint and beyond.”
Wattanga also said that timely payment of VAT and PAYE improved revenue.
The delegation was led by the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Budget Committee, Daniel Baran Sillo, who expressed satisfaction with KRA’s efforts in revenue collection and strategic planning.
The parliamentarians emphasized the importance of such initiatives in supporting the economic development and sustainability of the region.
