Valentine’s day offers lifeline to tourism industry in low season.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – It is a day that prompts a significant increase in travel demand as couples look for opportunities to escape their daily routines and indulge in romantic experiences.

Tourism players have taken advantage of this demand by offering special packages and deals tailored to couples, including romantic dinners, couples’ spa treatments, and scenic excursions.

Peter Wachira, the Founder of Tripitaca online travel booking platform says Valentine offers a lifeline for the tourism industry which posts low numbers during the first months of the year.

“Valentine’s Day is more than just a date; it’s an opportunity to create lasting memories with the ones we hold dear,” says Mr. Wachira. “We have curated experiences that capture the essence of romance and adventure, ensuring that every moment spent together is nothing short of magical.”

Like other players in the sector, his company has organized an exclusive Valentine’s dinner targeting Kenyans who will be seeking such services on that special day.

As part of Valentine’s package, Tripitaca has curated a dinner experience for lovers at Wetlands Banquet Centre in Westlands. Couples will also get to enjoy music from local artist Bensoul and a comedy show.

“Experts tell us bonding over experiences brings couples closer as they share cultural and culinary experiences which cascades into an uptick in demand for wedding venues, event planners, and any such related services,” he added.

Wachira urges service providers need to diversify their offerings, go beyond the traditions by making this Valentine’s Day one to remember.

This year’s Valentine’s day demand for flowers is expected to rise by over 30 per cent by the second week of February according the Kenya Flower Council.

Production is expected to rise to 4, 500 tonnes a week form 3,000 tonnes with the bulk of shipments headed to destinations in Europe.
