TV viewership dominates Kenyan media landscape, CA latest survey

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 23 – Television viewership continues to dominate the Kenyan media landscape, driven by the substantial growth of TV stations across the country.

The latest Kenya Media Landscape Report by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) shows a remarkable increase in the number of TV stations from 9 to 182 between 2015 and 2022.

The Authority attributed the surge in TV stations to the proliferation of digital media and the increasing availability of stations across various platforms.

“Between 2015 and 2022, there has been substantial growth in TV stations. There was a remarkable increase from 9 to 182.This shift in consumption patterns has played a pivotal role in shaping the current media landscape,” CA stated.

The survey indicated that TV viewership and online access experienced a significant surge, more than doubling between 2014 and 2023.

The data revealed that TV viewership rose from 46 percent in 2014 to 74 percent in 2023, increasing its prominent role in shaping the country’s media consumption habits.

“TV viewership and online access have experienced a significant surge, more than doubling between 2014 and 2023. This shift in preferences suggests a dynamic transformation in the way Kenyans engage with the media,“ it added.

In contrast, radio listenership has dropped from an audience base of 92 percent to 77 percent in just a span of 10 years.

“In 2014, radio dominated the media landscape in Kenya, with more than 90 percent of the population tuning in. However, there has been a notable decline, with radio listenership now standing at 77 percent,” said the Authority.

CA, however, indicated that radio and television viewership surpassed other communication mediums in all regions across the country except the North Eastern region, where internet usage took the lead.

The survey concluded that most people from urban settings registered a high percentage of those who watched TV, while a high percentage of those in rural settings listened to radio.
