NAIROBI, Kenya, JULY 26 – Facebook and WhatsApp have emerged as the leading social media platforms among Kenyans, according to the latest Audience Measurement and Industry Trends report released by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA).
Video-sharing platforms TikTok and YouTube closely follow in what CA say reflects the growing diversity in social media consumption among Kenyans.
“The prevalence of Facebook and WhatsApp in social media mentions highlights their extensive adoption and influential presence in the Kenyan digital landscape,” reads the report in part.
Similarly, the data revealed that smartphones are the dominant devices used by Kenyans to connect to the internet.
Kenya has witnessed a significant increase in smartphone usage, with the CA data from the previous year showing a rise in smartphone penetration to 61 percent, up from 54 percent.
This surge is attributed to a heightened focus on digital inclusion initiatives.
CA had in 2023 reported a notable growth in the country’s total international internet bandwidth.
During the period under review, the available bandwidth grew by 20.4 percent to 14,413.053 Gbps, while the utilized undersea bandwidth capacity saw a 25.5 percent increase, reaching 5,161.918 Gbps.
The Authority emphasized the importance of ensuring equitable access to smartphones amidst rapid technological advancements.
This, they assert, is crucial for promoting digital inclusion and bridging connectivity gaps across different demographics in Kenya.
