NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15 – The government has ordered owners of accommodation facilities to record and temporarily withhold identification documents of their clients following alarming increases in reported criminal activities.
The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) stated on Monday that the move is aimed at deterring criminal activities such as cases of murder within residential apartments, especially those affiliated with online accommodation, lodging, and AirBnB.
All private security officers of hospitality platforms have also been directed to maintain a current and accurate log of all vehicles, rickshaws, and motorcycles entering and departing from the facility, as well as ensure that the CCTV and security cameras are working in good condition and recording footage that is up-to-date.
This comes as police in Nairobi are investigating the murder of a woman whose body was found at an Airbnb located in Roysambu over the weekend.
The incident was reported by the property manager of the guest house, who alerted police to the discovery of blood-stained bedsheets on the staircase.
Police later found the woman’s body stashed in polythene bags, suggesting the killer may have tried to dispose of it.
The unfortunate incident comes barely a week after socialite Starlet Wahu was found murdered in an AirBnB in South B, leading to the arrest of a man she had checked in with, identified as John Matara.
Matara is currently under investigation for possible involvement in serial killings targeting women.
