Big chill affects travel, matches in UK

LONDON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — Glasgow Airport suspended all flight operations on Saturday morning due to a snowfall heavier than forecast while snow and ice warnings were also in place for other parts of the United Kingdom (UK).

“Our winter teams have been working through the night and we hope to resume operations as soon as possible,” the airport said on social platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Services at the airport were resumed later.

Many railway routes across Western Scotland, mainly trains running in and out of Glasgow Central, were disrupted on Saturday as heavy snow interfered with the signaling systems.

Several sporting events, including a match of the Football Association Challenge Cup and some Scottish Professional Football League matches, have been canceled or postponed due to snowfall and icy conditions affecting the sports fields.

The Met Office warned of potential travel disruptions for drivers due to freezing fog covering many parts of the country on Saturday morning.

Earlier this week, the UK’s national meteorological service issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice for parts of the country.

The warnings were extended and new warnings were added later.

Weather warnings for the northern coast and southwest Scotland, as well as parts of England, are in place until noon on Saturday.

Yellow warnings for parts of England and much of Wales will last until Sunday.

On Friday, dozens of schools across the country were either closed or postponed their opening due to heavy snowfall.
