NAIROBI, Kenya, April 14 – President William Ruto now says that the price of maize flour will go down starting next week when the country receives the imported shipment.
Ruto’s statement comes amid calls by Azimio leader Raila Odinga asking the government to consider lowering the prices of unga as a sign of good will toward the proposed bi-lateral talks.
The developments by the president come in the wake of a High Court order stopping Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi from implementing a contract requiring Zambia to produce maize for exclusive export to Kenya.
The case was filed by the Farmers Party of Kenya, arguing that the decision to contract Zambia to cultivate maize for export to Kenya, is irrational and in gross violation of the Kenyan Constitution.
Prices of maize flour have remained high in the country amid a prolonged drought coupled with the Ukraine-Russia war.
For instance, a two-kilo bag of flour now retails for about Sh200, up from a low of about Sh100 in 2020.
