NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 16 – The Employment and Labour Court will today rule on the term extension of former Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Managing Director (MD) Samson Macharia Irungu whose term ended this month.
KPC Board failed to renew Irungu’s contract after he exhausted his three-year term.
In a letter, the Board said that Irungu’s contract was terminated after he showed no interest in the post.
“There was no expression of interest on your part to have the contract extended or renewed despite an invitation by the board to do so vide the letter dated December 9, 2022 written to you by the board chairperson,” KPC board chairperson Faith Bett Boinett said in a letter.
“Your term lapsed on January 1, 2023 and you are no longer an employee of Kenya Pipeline Company Limited,” the letter dated January 13 2023 added.
However, former KPC Board Chair Rita Okuthe revised the ex-MD tenure to a five-years renewable contract based on performance, among others.
Irungu took over from Hudson Andambi in January 2020, who was serving in an acting capacity after former MD Joe Sang and other top officials were arrested over graft allegations.
Previously, Irungu served as the MD of Gulf Africa Petroleum Corporation.
