Elections, KCPE exams and Bitcoin among top Google searches in 2017

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 13 – Elections related terms, hit song despacito and KCPE Results were among the most searched items on Google in Kenya this year.

Google’s Communications and Public Affairs for Africa Dorothy Ooko says terms such as ‘Tibim’, Nasa Coalition and Jubilee Party were most searched considering it was an election year.

As far as personalities are concerned, Former President Mwai Kibaki was the most searched, followed by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba.

“For what we’ve gathered, people went online to find out how their children had performed, which is why ‘KCPE 2017 results’ was a popular search. Soo many rumors circulated this month regarding the former President (Kibaki), which could be why he was trending. The IEBC CEO had also found favor upon the eyes of women online, which probably drove the searches,” Ooko said.

Other popular searches on Google in Kenya this year was ‘What is Sarahah’ and ‘What is Bitcoin’.

“Recurring queries this year include the usual suspects such as ‘How to lose weight’, ‘How to lose belly fat’, ‘How to be pregnant’ among others. On the bit of losing weight, it is not just Kenyans who are dealing with weight issues; the search item tops the global trends too.”

Globally, Actress Meghan Markle who recently became engaged to Prince Harry of England was among the most searched person as was Hurricane Irma, iPhone X and TV series – 13 reasons why.
