Eight of the victims filed their case in court on Thursday, in which they urged the court to order that their identities and other records remain confidential to avoid exposing them to further trauma.

The victims include two men and six women.
Those named as respondents in the suit filed at the Milimani Law Courts include Attorney General Githu Muigai for the government, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo as well as the Minister for Medical Services and that of Public Health.
Atrocities listed in their suit papers include forcible circumcision for men, gang rape, forced pregnancy and deliberate HIV/AIDS transmission.
The victims who filed the suit on Thursday, five years after the crimes were allegedly committed told the court that they did not report the incidents to the police at the time because they knew just too well that little could be done to the perpetrators.
“Whenever the victims tried to report some of the incidents, police were unwilling to document their cases or were unwilling to investigate them,” COVAW deputy director Lydia Muthiani said.
They said perpetrators included state security agents, members of criminal gangs as well as the public.
