Tanzania Muslims condemn Libya strikes

DAR ES SALAAM, Mar 24 – Tanzania\’s Muslim general council condemned the international coalition\’s military action against Libya and demanded an immediate ceasefire.

"The attack on Libyan territory is barbaric and meant to undermine Islam," Chief Sheikh Mufti Shaaban bin Simba told reporters late Tuesday.

"Efforts have not been fully exhausted to find a peaceful solution to the Libyan problem," he added.

Simba urged African countries to rally behind Libya, noting that Moamer Kadhafi had supported many states in the continent. He also called on Muslims to hold special prayers for peace in the north African country.

"I appeal to all Muslim spiritual leaders in all the mosques all over the country to hold a special prayer seeking Allah\’s divine intervention to stop such bombardment and massacre taking place in Libya."

Kadhafi has financed several projects for Tanzania\’s Muslims, including a huge mosque named after him in the commercial capital Dodoma.
