Author deportation legit, Wetangula

NAIROBI, October 8 – Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetengula on Wednesday said the government had no apologies for deporting anti Obama author Jerome Robert Corsi from Kenya.

The minister said Kenya reserves the right to admit or send away foreigners just like other countries.

“If your conduct is inconsistence with the expected norms of behaviour in the country, then you can be kindly requested to take leave,” he told a meeting of African diplomats accredited to Nairobi.

Mr Wetangula said the immigration department found irregularities in the authors travel papers. “The officers did the right thing to order him out of the country immediately,” he emphasized.

Corsi was deported on Tuesday effectively terminating his plans to launch a book attacking US presidential candidate Barack Obama.

He was picked up by security officers from Laico Regency hotel where the launch was to take place on allegations that he did not have temporary work permits that are mandatory to conduct business in Kenya. Also bundled out of the country was his associate Timothy Bueler.

The two were driven to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where a police source said they were under instructions to guard Mr Corsi and his colleague until the time they would board a plane back to their country of origin on Tuesday night.

In his book Mr Corsi questions Mr Obama’s character and his links with Prime Minister Raila Odinga.  He also attacks the Illinois Senator’s suitability for the White House job.

The book that was released on August 1 claims Mr Obama is a dangerous, radical candidate for president and includes innuendoes and rumours that he was raised as a Muslim, attended a radical, black church and was ‘secretly seething with black rage.’

Meanwhile, Kenya will train Somalis to become soldiers in efforts to improve security in the African region.

Mr Wetangula said the government will announce when the training will begin after the IGAD meeting expected next month.

He said the training will take place in one of the police or army training institutions and between 6,000 to 10,000 Somalis will be recruited according to the Kenyan standards. The training period will be in accordance to that of Kenya’s military and police.

“The manner in which they will be recruited must represent the 5.4 formula under the charter, the intensity of training will be in consistent with how we train our own police or army, and if it is crush programme then the curriculum will be drawn by professionals who will be involved,” he said.
