India’s top court calls for stopping stubble burning amid air pollution

NEW DELHI, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — India’s top court Tuesday asked states neighboring Delhi to stop stubble burning to check air pollution in the country’s national capital and outskirts.

The apex court, while observing that choking air quality was responsible for the “murder of people’s health,” said air pollution in Delhi can not become a political battle.

The court said the burning of crop residue in neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan is a key factor behind the massive spike in Delhi’s air pollution every winter and asked their local governments to take steps to stop stubble burning.

The top court also asked Delhi to take the required steps.
