Huawei, Equity, Open University launch ICT Academy at Konza

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 18 – Huawei Kenya, Equity Group Foundation, and the Open University of Kenya (OUK) have launched a Huawei ICT Academy at Konza Technopolis to train over 10,000 learners in digital skills and boost innovation across health, education, agriculture, and fintech.

The academy, based at Kenya’s first digital-first university, will offer flexible online courses in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Networking, and Software Development, with dual certification from OUK and Huawei.

“This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing Kenya’s digital talent,” said Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao.

A Virtual Innovation Hub will also be created to support student-led tech solutions, while the Equity Group Foundation will extend its digital health services through the initiative to improve healthcare access in remote communities.

“We are scaling access to global tech skills for youth who might otherwise be excluded from the digital revolution,” said Dr. James Mwangi, OUK Chancellor and Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman.

OUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga added: “We’re unlocking new futures for learners across the country by democratizing higher education.”

The academy aligns with Kenya’s Digital Superhighway agenda under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), advancing the country’s transition to a knowledge-driven economy.
