Value of maize production in Uasin Gishu County up 875pc to Sh85.8bn

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 6 – The value of maize production in Uasin Gishu County jumped by 875 percent to Sh85.8 billion last year, up from Sh8.8 billion in 2020.

Latest data from the Uasin Gishu County Government, compiled in collaboration with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), shows the surge was driven by a sharp increase in maize output, which rose from 457,334 tonnes in 2020 to about 1.2 million tonnes during the period under review.

Ainabkoi Sub-County recorded one of the strongest performances, with maize production rising to 891,000 tonnes in 2024 from 71,712 tonnes in 2020, significantly boosting overall county output.

Moiben Sub-County emerged as the top earner, generating about Sh49 billion from 126,000 tonnes of maize last year, compared to Sh3.1 billion previously, despite relatively stable production volumes. It was followed by Turbo Sub-County, which earned about Sh25 billion, up from Sh1.6 billion during the same period.

The report also shows strong growth in wheat production, with the value of the crop rising to Sh1.9 billion from Sh1.3 billion over the review period.

Ainabkoi again led in wheat earnings, generating Sh594 million worth of the crop last year, followed by Soy Sub-County with Sh579.4 million and Moiben with Sh403 million, among others.
