KRA to enable tax filing via WhatsApp

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 22 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is rolling out new digital tools to make tax compliance simpler and more affordable.

Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga said the 24-hour WhatsApp chatbot offers 15 services, allowing users to ask queries and file returns without visiting KRA offices.

He added that the authority is investing in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics to further enhance tax management.

KRA chairman Ndiriitu Muriithi said upgrades to IT systems and software have modernised operations, reduced paperwork, and lowered costs for taxpayers.

He noted that the reforms have improved efficiency and simplified compliance.

In the second half of the 2025/26 fiscal year (FY), which ended December 2025, KRA collected Sh307.6 billion against a target of Sh285 billion, representing a 108 percent performance rate and 29.3 percent growth. Customs and Border Control also recorded Sh85.9 billion, surpassing the target and marking the highest monthly collection in KRA’s history.
