NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 5 – Abyan Consulting Limited has said the building that collapsed at a South C development site had received approvals from county and national regulatory agencies before construction began.
In a statement issued on January 5, the company said it was the developer and contractor of the project and dismissed reports questioning the project’s approval and compliance status, terming them inaccurate.
According to the firm, Nairobi City County granted physical and land use planning approval for the proposed mixed-use development on plot number 68/1306, South C, on December 19, 2023, following an application submitted in October that year. The company said approval for three additional floors was later granted on February 13, 2025.
The company said the National Construction Authority issued a project registration certificate on November 8, 2023, while the National Environment Management Authority granted an Environmental Impact Assessment licence on February 16, 2024.
Abyan said construction commenced in March 2024 after the approvals were issued and that the project was supervised by licensed architects and engineers. It added that it did not receive any stop orders from county or national authorities during the construction period.
The firm said it is cooperating with investigations by Nairobi City County, national regulators and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to establish the cause of the collapse.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
