NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 17 – Safaricom has stepped up support for Kenya’s drivers and boda boda riders, hosting a mobility workforce festival aimed at boosting earnings, safety and financial security across the transport sector.
The event, held in Nairobi as part of Safaricom’s Shangwe @25 celebrations, brought together more than 200 drivers, riders and industry players, including taxi-hailing firms, NTSA, DTB Bank, Turaco, Centonomy and Vivo Energy Kenya.
Participants received free health check-ups, vehicle diagnostics, financial advisory services and training sessions designed to address everyday challenges faced by mobility workers.
Safaricom Chief Consumer Business Officer Fawzia Ali Kimanthi said drivers and riders are critical to Kenya’s urban economy, noting that the telco’s tailored offerings are designed to keep them connected, protected and financially stable.
Through Bundle Ya Deree, drivers can access weekly and monthly packages offering data, voice minutes, subsidised insurance, fuel discounts at Shell stations and accident cover. Ofa Ya Boda targets motorcycle riders with flexible daily to monthly plans that include data, free access to rider apps, navigation tools and insurance options.
Nairobi-based cab driver Raphael Masica said the packages have helped him stay connected while cushioning him against work-related risks, adding that direct engagement with drivers shows Safaricom understands the realities of the sector.
Safaricom said the festival is part of a wider strategy to drive uptake of its mobility-focused products while strengthening the welfare, safety and financial resilience of drivers and riders nationwide.
