NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 1 – Kenyans consumed a record 414,861 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2024, a 15 percent jump from 360,594 tonnes in 2023, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The rise has been linked to government policy incentives, including the zero-rating of LPG, which have lowered costs and expanded household access nationwide.
“Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption grew significantly, rising 15% from 360,594 metric tonnes in 2023 to 414,861 metric tonnes in 2024,” EPRA said in its annual report.
The growth is expected to continue under the government’s National LPG Growth Strategy, which aims to make LPG the primary cooking fuel, cut reliance on biomass, and enhance environmental sustainability.
Key targets include doubling per capita LPG consumption from 7.5 kg in 2021 to 15 kg by 2030, alongside wider access for underserved areas through affordability and stronger distribution networks.
To support this, the plan prioritizes infrastructure investments such as a Common User Facility (CUF) to streamline LPG supply and reduce distribution costs. It also promotes LPG adoption in public institutions like schools and hospitals, while introducing incentives for low-income households and tightening safety regulations.
EPRA noted that per capita consumption rose to 7.9 kg in 2024, up from 7.0 kg in 2023, underscoring the shift toward cleaner cooking fuels.
