KRA nets Sh13.2bn from betting firms

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 5 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collected Sh13.23 billion in excise duty from betting firms in the 2024/25 fiscal year (FY), an improvement from the Sh10.6 billion raised during a similar period in the 2023/24 FY.

In the previous financial year, the taxman had planned to collect Sh11.3 billion.

Likewise, betting tax expanded to Sh5.7 billion from Sh5.5 billion.

In 2023, KRA integrated betting firms into its own system for real-time monitoring of taxes to seal leakages, boosting collections.

“This translates to a performance rate of 103.7% and a growth of 22.0%. The performance is attributed to KRA’s Taxation at Source initiatives specifically, integration of betting firms’ systems to KRA’s systems, enabling real-time monitoring of transactions,” KRA said in a statement.

“This has enhanced compliance and transparency and facilitated effective collection.”

Betting firms’ performance comes on the back of a sluggish economic growth that saw the country’s economy grow by 4.7 percent last year against an increase of 5.7 percent in 2023.

In the 2024/25 FY, KRA raised Sh2.571 trillion, representing a 6.8 percent growth from previous FY.
