Govt to set up resting places on highways to curb accidents

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 15 – The government is set to introduce resting places for lorries along major highways and expand road sections at identified blackspots in a bid to reduce accidents.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the ministry will employ telematics to monitor lorry drivers’ hours and curb fatigue-related crashes.

Regulations will be tabled in Parliament to formalize the creation of parking bays for heavy vehicles.

“We have mapped out blackspots across the country and are seeking a budget to widen sections and correct dangerous road stretches, including the Nithi Bridge, which will be advertised for works in this financial year,” Chirchir said.

The CS added that vehicle inspection will be opened to licensed private operators nationwide to ensure all vehicles are roadworthy.

He urged all road users—pedestrians, motorists, boda boda riders, and cyclists—to exercise caution.
