NAIROBI, Kenya, July 3 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a waiver on interest and penalties for late filing of income tax returns for 2024, following technical disruptions experienced on its iTax platform during the June 30 filing deadline.
In a public notice, KRA attributed the delay to a high volume of last-minute filers that overwhelmed the online system, leaving many taxpayers unable to access the return filing and payment services.
“Due to the high volume of taxpayers attempting to file their returns on 30th June, the system experienced technical difficulties preventing a number of taxpayers from submitting their returns on time,” KRA revealed.
The Authority confirmed that all penalties and interest arising from the delayed filings will be waived provided the affected returns are submitted by July 5, 2025.
KRA encouraged taxpayers to take advantage of the extended window to file their returns and settle any outstanding tax dues.
The announcement came in the wake of an inquiry by the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), also known as the Ombudsman, following widespread public complaints over iTax system failures.
The Commission said it had verified the complaints and confirmed that users encountered persistent error messages that hindered the filing process.
“The Commission lauds KRA for the prompt response to the Ombudsman’s inquiry with regard to the persistent itax system failures and acknowledges the waiver of interests and penalties on late filing of returns,” it stated.
