NAIROBI, Kenya Jul 1 – BAT Kenya reported a 54 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2024, surpassing its 2030 target to reduce these emissions by 50 percent, according to its Sustainability Report that was launched recently during the company’s 73rd Annual General Meeting).
This performance was attributed to the firm’s decarbonisation strategy, which aims to achieve 50 percent of the firm’s energy use from renewable sources by 2030.
Crispin Achola, BAT Kenya Managing Director, noted that the company invested Sh145 million in solar energy between 2021 and 2022, increasing its on-site generated electricity to 1,400-kilowatt peak (KwP).
To enhance sustainable agriculture and farmer livelihoods, the tobacco giant revealed that over 98 percent of contracted farmers grew alternative crops last year, including maize and avocados.
“We are pleased with the sustained progress made on our priorities, such as halving our scope 1 and 2 emissions ahead of target, enhancing sustainable agriculture practices and championing diversity, equity and inclusion across the organization,” said Achola BAT Kenya MD.
Achola emphasized the company’s continued commitment to creating shared value for all stakeholders.
He noted that this commitment is guided by BAT Kenya’s sustainability strategic impact areas, which include Tobacco Harm Reduction, Climate, Nature, Circularity, and Communities.
Additionally, the company reported 69 percent representation of women in the senior leadership team, surpassing its target of 45 percent by 2025.
Further, the firm trained a total of 208 women in its contracted tobacco farming community on financial literacy as part of its Sh10 million multi-year Rural Women’s Development Programme (RuWDeP).
Reflective of its performance in the environment space, BAT Kenya was recognised at the recent 2025 Energy Management Awards (EMAs) hosted by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), receiving multiple awards, including for sustained high performance, renewable energy, transport, and thermal savings.
