NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 11 – Expansion of the Rironi-Mau Summit Road will start this June after the Cabinet approved the widening of the single-way carriageway to a four-lane dual highway.
The 170-kilometer project, which will take 24 months to be finished, is part of the government’s broader infrastructure transformation aimed at enhancing connectivity across the country and the region while driving economic growth, the Cabinet announced today.
The dueling of the road suffered a delay after President William Ruto cancelled a tender awarded to a consortium of French firms last year ahead of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The dueling of the stretch had been agreed upon during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s term, which ended in 2022.
“This road development is expected to ease transport and travel from Nairobi through Nakuru to Western Kenya, a route that has long suffered from serious traffic congestion on weekends and during national holidays,” the Cabinet announced today.
This comes after the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi in January called for the expansion of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway into a dual carriageway road to improve the flow of traffic to western Kenya.
“We borrowed money to do roads up to the rural areas, some people take minutes to reach their villages  but an important road as the Nairobi Nakuru highway no one saw the need to make it a dual carriageway so that we can reach our homes in good time,” he said.
