Japan’s automaker Daihatsu recalls over 190,000 vehicles due to corrosion risks

TOKYO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) — Japan’s Daihatsu Motor Co. has announced a recall of over 190,000 vehicles spanning six models due to a defect in suspension springs that can lead to corrosion.

The recall, filed with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, involves vehicles manufactured between August 2016 and October 2018.

The affected models include Daihatsu’s Move Canbus, Hijet, and Hijet Deck Van, Subaru’s Sambar and Sambar Open Deck, and Toyota’s Pixis Van.

The issue arises from a potential peeling of the protective coating on the suspension springs, which can lead to corrosion. In severe cases, the springs could break, possibly causing contact with the tires and resulting in punctures.

Though no accidents have been reported, Daihatsu has received 608 reports of related problems.

The company has committed to replacing the defective parts at no cost starting Dec. 6 at dealerships across Japan.
