Microsoft launches AI Skilling initiative in Kenya to train 1mn by 2027

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 14 – Microsoft has unveiled a new initiative to train 1 million Kenyans in AI and cybersecurity by 2027, part of its broader commitment to democratize AI skills.

This program aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Kenya Digital Masterplan, aimed at equipping Kenyans for the digital economy.

Kenya’s youthful population, median age of 19, and a high rate of informal sector employment highlight the country’s potential for economic growth through digital transformation. With agriculture, telecommunications, and financial services primed for AI integration, Kenya is set to become a hub for AI talent.

Key Goals and Program Highlights

By 2027, Microsoft aims to empower small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), industry professionals, educators, and students. The program is designed to drive innovation, boost economic growth, and improve service efficiency across sectors, including government and education, through AI-driven solutions.

“Kenya’s vibrant tech ecosystem makes it the ideal location for our skilling initiative,” said Winnie Karanu, Microsoft’s AI National Skills Initiative Director for Kenya. “We’re committed to empowering individuals and organizations across all sectors.”

AI Skills Navigator Platform and Training Initiatives

The AI Skills Navigator platform will centralize Microsoft’s AI training content, providing learners with foundational and advanced skills through live bootcamps and in-person sessions in partnership with the Ministry of ICT.

The program also includes comprehensive AI education initiatives for K-12 students and teachers, developed with the Ministry of Education, to foster AI understanding in schools. A Faculty Immersion Program will build AI teaching capacity in universities, with funding support for AI research through the AI Research Catalyst Program.

Expanding Digital Skills through Partnerships

In collaboration with the Government of Kenya, UNDP, and the Public Service Commission, Microsoft has co-created a Centre of Competence to train 300,000 public servants over the next three years. The center aims to transform public service delivery with 50,000 policymakers, leaders, and users trained in the first year alone.

Partnering with the Kenya Bankers Association, KEPSA, ALN law firm, Cyber Shujaa, and the Africa Development Centre, Microsoft will lead cybersecurity campaigns to enhance security awareness. The partnership with Cyber Shujaa also aims to train 100 youth in cybersecurity, addressing talent gaps in the technology sector.

“Skilling at scale supports Kenya’s goal to become a global AI talent leader and reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to the digital economy,” added Karanu.
