NAIROBI, Kenya, May 7 – Clinker manufacturer Cemtech Limited has sought the nod of the environment watchdog of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to construct a clinker factory in Kitui County.
Cemtech, which has since submitted its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment report (EIA) to NEMA, seeks to put up a 5,500-watt thermal design power production line in Mwingi.
”The need for this EIA study is to predict the potential impacts of a proposed project and propose feasible mitigation measures against the negative impacts while enhancing the positive impacts for coexistence and sustainability as the proponent proposed to advance to Clinker Production Line,” reads the report in part.
The approval of the Kitui-based plant is set to put a stamp of approval on Devki’s dominance of the cement industry.
Devki has been on a charm offensive to scale up its presence in Kenya.
Just last month, President William Ruto commissioned a new Cemtech Sebit Clinker plant in West Pokot, estimated to cost Sh45 billion.
According to its chairman, Narendra Raval, the factory will produce an estimated 6,000 metric tons of clinker each day with an annual capacity of 2 million tons, just enough for the East African region.
The cement tycoon Raval has asserted that his chain of industries will have far reaching effects, especially through the creation of jobs for Kenyans living in those localities.
Clinker, typically consisting of calcium silicates, aluminates, and ferrites, is an important component in the production of cement and is formed by heating limestone.
