NEW DELHI, March 23 (Xinhua) — The death toll in the suspected toxic liquor consumption in the northern Indian state of Punjab on Saturday rose to 20, officials said.

The incident took place in Sangrur district. According to officials, 20 people have been undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Sangrur and Patiala districts.

Officials said eight persons have been arrested so far and a special police team is investigating the matter.

Police have seized a huge quantity of spurious liquor bottles during the raids at suspected places.

Media reports said earlier that at least 14 were dead in the incident.
