Cofek seeks answers on labeling of Velo products approval

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 24 – The Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) is seeking answers from the government over approval for the labeling of velo products.

“The chilling revelations as contained in the latest UK’s Guardian newspaper confirming the Ministry of Health (MOH) betrayed public interest and fell for the blackmail and other machinations of BAT-Kenya so as to illegally and unprocedurally approve labels of its Velo product,” In a letter to the Ministry of Health (MOH) Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Wafula, Cofek Secretary General Stephen Mutoro said.

Cofek is now asking MOH to provide minutes of the Taskforce meeting as well as correspondence between MOH and BAT-Kenya regarding the subject matter.

The federation also wants to know whether the ministry sought an opinion on the matter from the Attorney General’s office.

“Your office is in a fatal breach of provisions of Article 10 on National Values. It goes to affect you, as a person, under provisions of Article 75(1) as read together with Article 73 of the Constitution,” he said.

“TAKE NOTICE that we may seek for legal redress at the expiry of the said period without.”
